Ahmet Poyrazoğlu: from classroom to folk poetry
Born in Erciş in 1951, Ahmet Poyrazoğlu combined teaching with the âşık tradition. He attended Erciş High School and taught at Erciş Atatürk Primary School. Improvised poetry, verse exchanges and storytelling are central to his art.
His books include “Talan Olmuş Miras Ercişli Emrah Deyişleri” and “Ercişli Emrah ile Selbihan Hikâyesi”. His life and work have also been subjects of academic research.
Tovma Metsopetsi: a medieval historian
Armenian historian and cleric Tovma Metsopetsi (1378–1446) received his early education at Metsop Monastery north of Erciş, where he later taught and wrote. His connection is through the area’s historic intellectual life.
His “History of Tamerlane and His Successors” is an important source for the region in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Translator Robert Bedrosian also notes inaccuracies in this largely memory-based account.
Şerafettin Turan: historical research and recognition
Born in Erciş in 1925, Şerafettin Turan researched Ottoman history, Turkish culture and modern history. He taught at Ankara University’s Faculty of Languages, History and Geography and served as its dean. His work on Turkish–Italian relations took his research into archives beyond Turkey.
The Turkish Journalists Association records his 1999 Sedat Simavi Social Sciences Award for the fourth book of “Türk Devrim Tarihi”, subtitled “Çağdaşlık Yolunda Yeni Türkiye”. His career is a substantial example of Erciş’s connection with academic scholarship.
Hakan Pekcanıtez: a career in legal scholarship
In the autobiography published in a university volume honouring him, Hakan Pekcanıtez states that he was born in Erciş in 1956. His research concerns civil procedure and enforcement and bankruptcy law, with a career connected to Dokuz Eylül and Galatasaray universities.
Galatasaray University’s publication record offers a starting point for exploring his scholarship. The achievement here is sustained research, teaching and publishing rather than a competition result.
Sabahattin Tuncer: a path into painting
An exhibition catalogue preserved by SALT Research identifies painter Sabahattin Tuncer as born in Erciş in 1950. He studied in Neşet Günal’s studio at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts; the same document records his participation in a 1989 group exhibition.
Works and exhibition records offer a way to explore an artist beyond their public profile. Tuncer extends the town’s artistic connections from songs and poetry to painting. He should not be confused with the businessman of the same name.
Poetry and music, from Emrah onwards
Ercişli Emrah’s poetry and the folk story involving Selvi have a central place in local cultural memory. Later generations include Mehmet Emin Tellioğlu, known as Cihanî, and Hüsamettin Ergül, who uses the name Garip Ergül.
Atakan Çelik and Hüsamettin Subaşı provide routes into local music through performance and collecting. Academic, poet and novelist Ömer Çaha is also Erciş-born. Our folk songs and literature article offers listening and reading starting points for these names.
Yaşar Kemal: family roots, not birthplace
Ernis, now Ünseli, was the place of origin of Yaşar Kemal’s family. According to his foundation’s biography, the writer himself was born in Hemite. His connection belongs to the wider Lake Van region through his family, rather than to a list of people born in Erciş.
Kara Yusuf and medieval Erciş
Kara Yusuf, ruler of the Qara Qoyunlu, appears in the town’s medieval history. The TDV Encyclopaedia of Islam describes the principality’s position around Erciş when he came to power. This places the town within a wider regional history.
The connection is historical rule and settlement, not evidence for an exact birthplace. His biography and the attribution of particular local tombs also require separate evidence.
Erciş on sporting podiums
Taha Yasin Zortul won left-arm gold and right-arm silver in the age-15 category at the 2026 European Armwrestling Championships. Coach Sinan Ağlar’s muay thai work in Erciş illustrates the contribution of those who develop young athletes.
Team achievements include Erciş Belediyespor’s 2018 and Ömeroğulları Ercişspor’s 2023 Turkish beach soccer titles. These are dated results, not statements of current championship status. Our sport article covers these teams and athletes alongside Ulupamir’s equestrian sports.
Scientific curiosity starts at school too
The official profile of Gaziosmanpaşa Ömer Albayrak Middle School records regional third place in chemistry in the 2018–2019 TÜBİTAK 2204-B Middle School Research Projects Competition. This is a school team’s research achievement, not a national title or a professional scientific award.
This is a growing, sourced selection rather than a complete register of famous people. Readers with documented work by an artist, researcher or athlete can share a name, their connection to Erciş and a published record to help expand it.
