The plain, farming and livestock

The plain northwest of Lake Van underpins local production. The provincial tourism directorate identifies farming and livestock as major economic activities, alongside beekeeping and pearl mullet fishing. Fields, vegetable plots and orchards all belong to that picture.

Van Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s district report, using 2020 data, records wheat, barley, fodder crops and sugar beet among the crops grown. It discusses sheep, goats and cattle alongside meat and milk production. Grapes and cabbage may be the familiar names, but local production extends beyond them.

From beet to sugar, from production to trade

Erciş Sugar Factory is a tangible connection between agriculture and industry. Türkşeker’s factory profile dates its opening to 17 August 1989. Understanding the local economy means considering how crops are processed as well as how they are grown.

The chamber’s report also describes commercial activity and industrial businesses of different sizes. It is a useful starting point for seeing Erciş as more than an agricultural settlement. Current vacancies, wages and investment opportunities require separate research.

Historic monuments are only one part of cultural life. A district education announcement dated 5 December 2025 documents a teachers’ folk-dance group and a meeting at Atakan Çelik Cultural Centre. The wider initiative also includes painting, theatre, music and literature.

Working together with local produce

A local-products workshop project announced in February 2025 names the Erciş Selvihan Women’s Enterprise and Business Cooperative as its beneficiary. The announcement proposes processing and packaging facilities. It offers an example of how local production and opportunities for women to work together can intersect.
