23 October and 9 November: separate earthquakes
The earthquake near Van on 23 October 2011 caused severe destruction in Erciş too. The USGS catalogue records its magnitude as 7.1. A second destructive earthquake centred on Van–Edremit followed on 9 November. Their dates and consequences should be distinguished.
AFAD reports 644 deaths across the two earthquakes. This is not an Erciş-only total or a figure for 23 October alone; it refers to the two events together.
People who came to help
AFAD’s contemporary account describes search-and-rescue teams, health workers, public agencies and civil-society organisations participating in the response. Teams reached the region by road and air as part of the work following the earthquake.
Remembering that solidarity need not turn loss into a story of triumph. The efforts of people helping one another can be acknowledged alongside the grief of those who lost someone.
In the memory of a town
A number or a photograph of a damaged building cannot fully tell this part of Erciş’s history. An earlier view of a school, home or street may hold a different meaning for someone who knew it. Looking at the town today should leave room for that personal memory.
