What does “coldest” mean here?
The Turkish State Meteorological Service’s extremes table lists Turkey’s lowest temperature as −46.4 °C, measured at Van–Çaldıran on 9 January 1990. This is a record from a particular date.
It does not establish that Çaldıran is the coldest place every day or has the lowest annual average of all districts. Plan around the forecast for your visit, rather than the historical extreme.
From lakeshore to high plateau
The provincial tourism directorate describes Çaldıran as a volcanic plateau in northern Van, placing the district centre at about 2,050 metres. The Van–Doğubayazıt road passes through it towards Tendürek. Its upland landscape and livestock farming offer other ways to understand the area.
Çaldıran is a separate district, not a neighbourhood of Erciş. Treat Muradiye and Çaldıran as a distinct regional outing when adding them to a visit, checking road and weather conditions and allowing time for the return.
A shared name, a different place
The Battle of Çaldıran in 1514 is sometimes associated with today’s Van district. The provincial directorate locates it instead on another Çaldıran plain near Khoy in Iran. A familiar name does not necessarily locate a historical event in the place you are visiting.

Use this introduction as a starting point for understanding the geography, rather than as a list of operating facilities or a packaged tour.
