The mountain north of Lake Van
Süphan rises north of Lake Van, in the landscape between Erciş, Adilcevaz, Patnos and Malazgirt. Its volcanic history is part of the surrounding terrain. Look beyond the summit to see how its lower slopes relate to the lakeshore.
You do not have to climb it to appreciate the mountain. Mountaineering involves separate preparation and suitable conditions, while a view from the shore offers its own introduction.
Aygır: freshwater below Süphan
Lake Aygır lies south of Süphan in the Adilcevaz district of Bitlis. The district’s account describes it as a freshwater lake. Sharing a region with Lake Van does not mean sharing the same water chemistry.
The mountain and smaller lake together offer a different sense of scale from the broad shore of Lake Van.
Arin: a soda lake for waterbirds
Lake Arin, also in Adilcevaz, is known as Sodalı Göl, or Soda Lake. The nature conservation authority highlights its importance for waterbirds, including white-headed ducks, ruddy shelducks and swans stopping during migration.
The contrast between freshwater Aygır and soda lake Arin is a reminder of the variety within the Lake Van basin. Watch birds from a distance, using binoculars rather than approaching the water’s edge.
