The same rocks, another season
Koçköprü is a place to read the changing seasons in the landscape. Picture green slopes in summer beside rock faces covered in winter white: vegetation and snow change, while the outlines of the canyon remain.
A winter photograph can make it seem as though the canyon is always frozen. The icicles are seasonal formations, however, changing with the weather rather than permanent features.

In February 2025, Anadolu Agency reported on the long icicles at Koçköprü and the photographers documenting them. An İHA report from January 2026 described daytime snowmelt freezing again at night and building up on the rock faces.
In the photographs, narrow ribbons of ice merge into thicker curtains. Dark rock, white snow and translucent ice bring out different textures beside one another. No two winters, or even days, need look the same: these photographs record particular moments.
Give the landscape some space
Start with a wide view of the canyon, then look for patterns in the ice and details in the rock. These two scales reveal different parts of the scene. Choose a position for photography away from hanging icicles and icy ground.
Check local weather and road conditions before setting out. Past reports of visits do not establish that roads are open today or that every part of the canyon is accessible. Getting to know Koçköprü through more than one season offers another way into the natural landscape of Erciş.
