An island off Gevaş
Akdamar is in southern Lake Van, off the district of Gevaş. For someone staying in Erciş, it is a separate excursion to another shore. The road journey and boat crossing need to be planned together.
The Church of the Holy Cross
The island’s best-known building is the Church of the Holy Cross, commissioned by King Gagik I of Vaspurakan in the tenth century. In this example of Armenian church architecture, a central dome rises over a plan resembling a four-leaf clover. Carved reliefs on the outer walls are among its defining features.
The Cultural Portal explains scenes drawn from biblical texts. On the western façade, the king presents a model of the church to Christ; elsewhere are episodes from the story of Jonah. Looking at individual figures reveals how the surface of a building can tell a story.
Seeing the lake from an island
Leave time for both the carvings and the wider view. Water that stretches in front of you from the mainland becomes a landscape surrounding you on the island. That change of perspective connects the different places around Lake Van.
Confirm boat departures, the return crossing and current museum visiting arrangements close to your trip. A journey from Erciş needs time for these connections as well as the visit itself.
